Approaches to digital stewardship vary profoundly from institution to institution. Given the substantial differences across institutions in resources, organizational models, and program maturity, what does a successful digital preservation program look like? Co-authors will discuss preliminary results from a forthcoming study based on interviews with practitioners from diverse backgrounds, positions, and institution types. The project’s goal is to identify common outcomes, characteristics, and conditions that make a digital preservation program more or less successful overall. In this panel, co-authors will provide background about the study; identify emergent themes and trends; and engage in a moderated discussion about how these factors affect practitioners day-to-day and the broader impact that this has on the digital preservation community at large. Ultimately the panel will address how digital preservation can be done well and how it can be done poorly, regardless of an institution’s size or capacity.
